A year ago today I left for what ended up being the best adventure of my life so far. Who knew that the 3 people I met on the Ponte Vecchio that first day would end up making my abroad experience so wonderful that it's almost indescribable. I remember our first night out, as we passed the Duomo, I said, "this isn't just for a week or a month, it's for 4 months...we're going to be so familiar with this culture". Since Florence is such a small city, I really felt that I knew everything that it had to offer. So much famous artwork is packed into such a tiny city. One day I was able to sit in the Acadamia and sketch Michelangelo's "David" for as long as I wanted. Another day I was able to take myself to the Bargello, which was on the corner of the street I lived in, and sneak pictures of Donatello's "David". A week later, I went to the Uffizi, which allowed me to be a foot away from Botticelli's "The Birth Of Venus". The list goes on and on, and it all was offered in the city I lived in. Studying at LdM gave me so many first hand opportunities with art and fashion. Everything, and I literally mean everything I know about fashion came from my semester in Italy. I've applied my knowledge since I've been back to so many situations that I wouldn't have been able to do if I didn't attend LdM. Being able to go to designer's museums, galleries, and exhibits opened my eyes to their true talent and has inspired my desire for design. It also gave me probably the one and only chance I'll ever have to design and walk in a fashion show.
Being in Italy allowed me to travel around Europe as much as I possibly could in a few months. I was able to experience the culture of 7 different cities and every one of them taught me something new. I couldn't pick a favorite place because each of them offer something incredible. The fact that I was in Anne Frank's house in Holland where she hid from the Nazi's for 2 years does not seem real to me. You are taught about historical figures and places your whole life in school and being able to physically be in the space you were taught about is breathtaking.
I hope one day I'll come back to 108 Via Ghibellina and sit in our kitchen again. The day I get to sit around that kitchen table and drink red wine with Bri, Lauren, Sarah, Genevieve, Tina, and Katie is the day I will only be filled with true happiness and nothing else.
This is all just barely skimming the surface of my feelings towards my semester abroad. To everyone that I met, I hope you all know that you had an effect on me and I hope we cross paths again in the future.
Europe offers so much beauty and I hope everyone gets a chance in their life to see it.
Meet you on the Ponte Vecchio again one day Bri, Sarah, and Lauren
